Lake

Allentsteig is flown through by the "Small Thaya". Since the 15th century this brook is damed up to a beautiful lake. There is a promenade on the left side, which is an important attraction of the town. In summer the lake s a wonderful place for swimming, fishing and boating, in winter you have the biggest surface for ice-skating not a soul to be seen. On the dam in August 1999 the sculpture "landscape knife" by Valie Export was unveiled. The sculpture reminds of 7.000 inhabitants of central Waldviertel, who were resettled between 1938 and 1941 to give way for the NS-German Wehrmacht establishing an military training area still existing.

In the beginning of the 20th century Allentsteig and the lake attracted a great number of tourists enjoying summer holidays every year. Rising above the lake you find a few villas with the closed-down formertop-hotel Schaich.
